Church Constitution

PART A: CONSTITUTION

PREAMBLE
We declare and establish this constitution to preserve and secure the principles of our faith and to govern this body in an orderly manner, consistent with the accepted tenets of the Nigeria Baptist convention and to preserve the liberties of individual Church members and the freedom of action of this body in its relation to other churches and organizations.

Name
The church shall known as “Bodija-Ashi Baptist church, Ibadan”.
The title of the corporate body shall be “the Registered Trustees of Bodija-Ashi Baptist church, Ibadan.

Mission Statement
“To be a covenant fellowship of Christians empowered by the Holy Spirit to share Christ with our world; a church whose purpose as individual is to be Christ-like our daily living awaiting the translation of Jesus Christ would effect us on His return”.

Articles of Faith
1. Of the Scriptures.
“We believe that the Holy Bible, the Old and New Testament was written by men divinely inspired, that it has God for its author, that it reveals the principles by which God shall judge us, that it remains the centre Christian Union and the Supreme Standard by which all human conduct, creeds and opinions shall be tried” 2 Tim:3:16, 2 Pet.1:20-21.

2. Of God
“We believe that there is one, and only one living and true God, who is the maker and Supreme Ruler of Heaven and Earth, that God is revealed to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each with distinct attributes but without division of nature essence or being”.

3. Of the Fall of Man
“We believe that man was created in the image of God in holiness, under the law of his maker, but by voluntary transgression fell from that holy and happy state. Inconsequence of which all mankind are now sinners, not by constraint but by choice, being by nature utterly devoid of that holiness required by the law of God, positively inclined to evil, and therefore under just condemnation of eternal ruin without dependence or excuse.

4. Of the way of Salvation.
“We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; through the mediatorial work of the Son of God, who came to the world by means of the Virgin Birth, freely took upon Him the nature of man, yet without sin, and by His death made a full atonement for our sins, that having risen from the dead, He is now enthroned in heaven; being in every way qualified to be suitable, and the all-sufficient Saviour who had made the blessing of salvation free to all by the Gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept Him by a cordial, penitent, and obedient faith, and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinners on earth, but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the gospel; which rejection result in eternal condemnation”.

5. Of God’s Election by Grace.
“We believe that election is the eternal of God, according to which He graciously regenerates, sanctifies and saves sinners; that being perfectly consistent with the free will of man, that it is a most glorious display of God’s sovereign goodness, being infinitely free, wise, holy and unchangeable ; that it utterly excludes boasting; and promote humility; that is may be ascertained by its effect in all who truly believe the gospel; that it is the foundation of Christian assurance; and that to appropriate it with ourselves ,demand and deserves the utmost diligence”.

6. Of Repentance and faith
“We believe that Repentance and Faith are scared duties and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God; whereby, being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy, at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, priests, and king and relying upon Him alone as the only and All Sufficient saviour”.

7. Of Regeneration
“We believe that in order to be saved, sinners must be regenerated or born again; regeneration being a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit enlightening the minds of sinners to understanding the divine truth and renewing their whole nature to love and practice holiness”.

8. Of justification
“We believe Justification is God’s gracious and full acquittals of sinners who believe in Christ, from all sins, through the sacrifice that righteousness done, but solely through faith in CHRIST Jesus and its secure every other blessing needful for time and eternity”.

7. Of Regeneration
“We believe that in order to be saved, sinners must be regenerated or born again; regeneration being a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit enlightening the minds of sinners to understanding the divine truth and renewing their whole nature to love and practice holiness”.

9. Of Sanctification
“We believe Sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit by which believers are set apart from the world and are made partaker of His holiness that its is a progressive work; and it is begun in regeneration, and it is carried on in the heart of believers by the presence and power of the holy Spirit, the Sealer and Comforter, in the continual use of the appointed means, especially, the word of God, Self examination, self denial, watchfulness and prayer”.

10. Of the Perseverance of Saints
“We believe that such only are real believers as endure unto the end, that their persevering attachment to Christ is the grand mark which distinguishes them from superficial professors, that a special providence watches over their welfare; and that they are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation”.

11. Of harmony of the law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of His moral government, that it is holy, just and good, and that the inability which the scripture ascribed to fallen men to fulfill its precepts arises entirely from their love of sin; to deliver and to restore them through a mediator in unfeigned obedience to the Holy law, and of the, means of grace connected with the establishment of the visible church.

12. Of a Church
“We believe that the church is composed of all true disciples of Jesus Christ who is the Head of the Church; in Him is invested supremely all power for its government; to each of these Churches, he has given needful authority for administering that order, discipline and worship which He has appointed; the regular officers in the leadership are Pastors and Deacons”

13. Of Baptism
“We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion in water of a believer in the name of the father ands the Son and Holy Spirit; as sign of his fellowship with the death and resurrection of sins, and of his giving himself up to God, and to live and walk newness of like; it prerequisite to church membership, and to participation in the Lord’s supper, the believer submits himself to baptism as an act of obedience to his Lord, but baptism is not a part of nor essential to his salvation”.

14. Of the Lord’s Supper
“We believe that the Lord’s supper is an ordinance of Jesus Christ, to be administered with the elements of bread and wine, and to be observed by His Church till the end of the world; that it is a memorial of Christ’s death in his love for sinners, this ordinance being always preceded by solem sel-examination”.
15. Of the Holy Spirit
“We believe that the Holy Spirit is the free gift of God to every believer who asks God, that His presence and power are essential for effective Christian living, witness and the ministry of the Gospel; He is manifested in the believer by His Fruit and gifts which are relevant to the believer and the church in all ages”.

16. Of the Lord’s Day
“We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day or Christian Sabbath; it is to be kept sacred for religious purposes and giving ourselves to the worship of God and rest, abstaining from non-essential circular work”.

17. Of Civil Government
“We believe that Civil government is the divine institution of God for the interest and good order of human society, and that governing authorities are to be prayed for, conscientiously honoured and obeyed, except only in things opposed to the will of our LORD Jesus Christ; who is the only Lord of the conscience, and the prince of the Kings of the earth”.

18. Of the Resurrection
“We believe that the bodies of men after death return to dust but their spirit return to God, the righteous, to rest with Him; the wicked to be reserved under darkness to judgment, that at the last day, the bodies of all the dead, both just and unjust would be raised”.

19. Of Judgment
“We believe that God has appointed a day wherein He will judge the world by Jesus Christ, when the wicked shall go into everlasting punishment; the righteous, into everlasting life”.

Church Covenant
“Having been led, as we believe, by the spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our saviour, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, heavenly hosts and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ”. We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit to walk together in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge, holiness and comfort, to promote its prosperity and spiritually, to sustain its worship, ordinance, discipline and doctrines, to contribute cheerfully and regularly the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor and the spread of the gospel through all nations. We also engage to maintain family and personal devotions, to religiously educate our children, to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances, to walk circumspectly in the world, to be just in our dealings, faithfully in our engagements and exemplary in our comportment to avoid all tattling, backbiting and excessive anger, to abstain from the sale use of intoxicating drinks as a beverages and to be zealous in our effort to advance the kingdom of our saviour. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love, to remember each other in prayer, to aid each other in sickness and distress, to cultivate Christian sympathy in felling and courtesy in speech, to be slow to take offence but ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our saviour secure it without delay. We, moreover, engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry our the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s word.

Whoever confess Jesus Christ openly and has decided to follow Him as Lord and reaffirms this after baptismal training shall be baptized.
(a) The baptism shall be by immersion and water
(b) It shall be performed by an ordained Baptist Minister
(c) The Deacons are to help in preparation toward and during baptism.
(d) It could done during a normal service inside the Church or in an open space organized for the service.

The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper shall be for members of the Church who are in good standing; it should be administered by an ordained Baptist Minister and those chosen to take care of spiritual matters.
(a) The Lord’s Supper shall be celebrate at least once in a quarter or at such other time as the Church may determine.
(b) The Lord’s Supper may be celebrated during service organized by the church for such.
(c) The Church Pastor shall be the organizer of the Lord’s Supper.

Church Relationships
1. We agree that the government of this church is to be under the Lordship of Jesus Christ who, through the Holy Spirit has vested it in the believers comprising this local expression of the body of Christ. Such processes, discussion and decision- making are means by which the purpose of God for His Church is to be discerned. Therefore, when a member exercise his voting right, he is doing so in response to what he prayerfully believe to be God’s will on any given matter.
2. We agree to co-operate and support Baptist Associations, Conference and the Nigerian Baptist Convention and to Promote the instruction that set up these bodies.
3. We agree as a Church to cooperate with other Christian bodies without sacrificing our doctrinal beliefs and denominational practices.
